Poor Circulation To The Feet
What causes poor blood flow to the feet?
Atherosclerosis and Diabetes are two of the most common causes. (Atherosclerosis is a process where fatty plaques build up inside the blood vessels making them narrow so that the blood finds it difficult to get through).
What causes atherosclerosis?
1. Cigarette smoking
2. High levels of fat in our diet e.g. fast foods, fried foods, cream cakes and buns etc.
3. Diabetes
What are the foot symptoms?
1. Leg pain when walking. This is usually worse when going uphills or up steps.
"Rest pain" at night that is relieved by hanging the leg out of the bed.
2. Perishing cold feet
3. You may have had a foot sore/cut in the past which was difficult to heal
4. Black areas on the toes or feet (this is in severe cases)
How can I help?
1. Stop smoking.
2. Walking can help encourage small new blood vessels to develop.
3. Medication can help reduce cholesterol (fat) and control high blood pressure.
4. Have a medical check for diabetes and other conditions associated with poor blood flow to the feet.
5. See a podiatrist/chiropodist to have your circulation tested
